Social Anxiety Forums: How Do They Rate?

By March 7, 2011

Do you participate in online discussion forums about social anxiety disorder (SAD)? If so, which ones do you visit the most?

There are several active discussion forums for those interested in talking about SAD, including the one here at About.com. The other major discussion forums include:

Social Anxiety Support: A set of message boards and literature about SAD.

Social Phobia World: Popular SAD message board with over 10,000 members.

SA-UK: Message board for those dealing with SAD in the United Kingdom.

Online discussion forums can be a great place to talk with other people experiencing the same problems. They are particularly helpful for those with SAD; allowing for honest and open discussion among people who might not otherwise ever have the chance (or the courage) to speak.

When thinking about message boards and SAD a number of questions popped into my head. I thought I would put them out to you, the readers.

  • Which forums do you visit?

  • Have forums helped you?

  • Have you made friends in online discussion forums?

  • Do you feel at home on these message boards, or does social anxiety still hold you back?

  • Have you ever had a bad experience on a forum?

I don’t really go to any message boards. I feel I have too many different disorders to bother with one specific board. I am just an anxious, depressed nut :)

The About.com boards are confusing to use, I don’t really like them.

I suppose that it would make it difficult to find support on specific boards if your problems overlap different areas. Is there anything in particular about the About boards that you find confusing or don’t like?

Love social anxiety support. It helps me keep on top of the latest anxiety news, reminds me that I’m not alone, and is just a good way to pass the time. I haven’t connected with many people though.

It is not so much confusing as it is empty and rarely used. The comment system on the posts (like this one) conflict with the mmessage board.

Sometimes I think my issued are deeper then SAD and SAD is a symptom of my other problems. Low self esteem etc. I wish there was a place to be part of but I haven’t found one yet.

Just trying to understand – when you say that the comment system on the posts conflict with the message board – what do you mean? If there is some way to improve everyone’s experience in the forums I’m all ears.

It is true that the forum is pretty quiet in comparison to the more well known ones like social phobia world and social anxiety support. Unfortunately, it is the chicken and egg scenario.. need more people to participate in order for more people to participate.
