The ability to remember names of people that you are introduced to is an important social skill. Remembering someone's name that you have met shows that you are interested in getting to know that person. Below are the steps to help you remember names after introductions.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: Varies

Here's How:

  1. Make sure that you heard the name right. If you did not understand the name ask for it to be repeated. If it is a difficult name, ask how it is spelled.

  2. Associate the person's name with some real or imaginary feature. For example, if meeting a "Bob" you could imagine him bobbing in the water. Hold the image in your mind for a few moments to make sure it sticks.

  3. Use the person's name in conversation as soon as you can. If possible, introduce that person to someone that you know.

  4. Repeat the name to yourself after meeting the person. Make a point of reminding yourself of the person's name after some time has passed.

Tips:

  1. In a business situation, ask for a business card to make it easier to remember someone's name. If given a card, do not just put it in your pocket. Read the card, and if appropriate make a comment about the company or position. Thank the person's for the card.

  2. If you forget the name of someone that you have met, say something like "I remember meeting you at Julie's party." Chances are she will be pleased that you remember her and not mind that you have to ask for her name again.
