Question: What Medications Are Approved by the U.S. FDA for Treating SAD?
Answer: Although your doctor may prescribe any one of a number of medications for treating social anxiety disorder (SAD), only three medications have received official approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These medications are Paxil (paroxetine), Zoloft (sertraline), and Effexor (venlafaxine). Both Paxil and Zoloft are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) while Effexor is a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor.
