Definition: The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Text Revision (DSM-IV TR) is the handbook used by mental health professionals for diagnosing mental illness. Specific diagnostic criteria are included for all currently recognized mental health disorders. Originally published in 1994 by the American Psychiatric Association, it was released in 2000 as a text revision. Earlier versions of the DSM date back to 1952. The DSM-V is planned for publication in the year 2012.
