Definition:
Celexa (citalopram hydrobromide) is a medication used in treating depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. A selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), Celexa slows reabsorption of the chemical serotonin in the brain. Manufactured by Forest Laboratories, Celexa has not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA) for the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD), however research evidence suggests that the medication is more effective than placebo in treating SAD. Celexa is the precursor to Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate), also manufactured by Forest Laboratories.
