Definition: Beta blockers are medications commonly used before an anxiety-provoking event or performance to alleviate the physical symptoms of anxiety. Beta blockers work by binding to beta receptors in the body and blocking the effects of epinephrine and norepinephrine. Beta blockers used in the treatment of social anxiety disorder (SAD) may include Inderal (propranolol) and Tenormin (atenolol).
