Definition: In vivo exposure is a therapy technique in which feared situations are experienced in order to decrease anxiety. Feared situations are usually faced as part of a hierarchy from the least to most anxiety-provoking. For example, someone with social anxiety disorder (SAD) who fears social gatherings may start by having lunch with a family member and gradually work up to attending a formal dinner party.
