Definition: The parasympathetic nervous system and sympathetic nervous system combined form the autonomic nervous system (ANS). The parasympathetic nervous system is responsible for inhibiting or opposing the effects of the sympathetic nervous system. The parasympathetic nervous system originates in the brain stem and lower part of the spinal cord and increases activity of the intestines and glands, relaxes sphincter muscles, stimulates digestive secretions, slows the heart and dilates blood vessels.
