Definition: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a recognized mental disorder, diagnosed using the criteria set forth in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). The hallmark characteristic of SAD is significant and persistent fear or avoidance of social and performance situations in which evaluation, rejection or embarrassment are possible.
