Tip of the Month: Be Good to Yourself

Wednesday January 7, 2009

People with social anxiety disorder (SAD) tend to have a biased way of looking at themselves and the rest of the world. When it comes to themselves, they are harsh critics. When it comes to everyone else, they are full of forgiveness and praise. In other words, they are their own worst enemies.

This month's tip reminds you to be as good to yourself as you would to someone else. The next time a negative thought about yourself creeps in, imagine whether you would think that way about another person in your shoes. If not, at least give yourself the same consideration that you give to others.

(1) Nick Hanlon says:

This is great advice to all people experiencing social anxiety and is a major part of overcoming it. In 7 years of working with them, I have yet to meet a social anxiety sufferer who does not beat themselves up, put themselves down or undermine their confidence continually. This is a cause of social anxiety, rather than an effect, as we have a choice over how we treat ourselves.

I agree with this post and Nick. I have social anxiety and looking back at some moments I have had, what I have realised is I pull my self down and undermine my confidence. I am definatly my own worst enermy.

Now the hardest part is going to be changing my thoughts.
