Selective mutism is a disorder first diagnosed in childhood in which a child fails to speak in certain situations such as school or with unfamiliar people. The disorder has its roots in extreme social anxiety, and when caught early responds well to treatment such as behavioral therapy and medication.
Recently I was reading the heartwarming story of Ryan Rodriguez, a little boy who had never spoken a word in his four short years of life until he attended an Orlando Magic basketball game. He had seen the team on television and when he showed an interest, his father purchased $600 plus tickets in the hope of triggering something in his son. His plan worked, and the duo was given tickets through the playoffs after team officials were informed of Ryan's story.
If you suspect your child may suffer with selective mutism or social anxiety disorder, it is important to seek help as soon as possible. Early treatment offers the best hope of improvement for your child.
