Question: Can I Use Self Help Strategies for Social Anxiety Disorder?
Answer: Self-help strategies for social anxiety disorder (SAD) are useful as a complement to standard treatment. There is no substitute for professional diagnosis and treatment when dealing with severe mental health problems. However, you may want to consider self-help strategies for a number of reasons. If you have mild symptoms that only bother you occasionally, they might be something that you could manage through self-help. If you have already received treatment for SAD, you may want to use self-help strategies to maintain the improvements that you've already made. Finally, if treatment is currently unavailable (for a variety of reasons) or you are not yet ready to seek help, self-help techniques are your next best option. Ideally, the techniques would be a starting point toward receiving traditional treatment.
