Definition: A phobia is an irrational and persistent fear of certain objects, activities or people. People with phobias will typically go to great lengths to avoid the feared object, situation or person. A diagnosis of an anxiety disorder may be made if the daily functioning of the individual is compromised by his or her excessive fear.
