Definition: The central nervous system (CNS) consists of the brain and spinal cord, and is the control center for mental and physical activities of the body. Communication in the CNS is carried out by chemical messengers known as neurotransmitters that pass messages between nerve cells (neurons). Medications used to treat mental disorders such as social anxiety disorder (SAD) include those that alter levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, and therefore the functioning of the CNS.
