Definition:

Valerian root is a dietary supplement that has been shown in clinical research to improve sleep quality. Although the supplement has also been used to relieve nervous tension and anxiety, no research exists to support this use. The advantages of valerian root over traditional prescription medications include a low risk of side effects and dependency. Since the Food and Drug Administration does not regulate the production of herbs and supplements, there are no guarantees about the ingredients or safety of the product.
